ROCKETS SUMMARY 2009-10-06Battier out for a week

Shane Battier will be out for at least a week after a slight muscle pull suffered late in Tuesday's practice.

"I was pretty disappointed last night," Battier said. "I got home and told my wife I'll see here tomorrow and locked myself in my room. I want to be out here with these guys and playing. I don't think it's too severe of a pull. ...

"It's not something I want lingering. It's not worth rushing back to where I'll have to deal with it the rest of the season."

Beck gets a chance

With Shane Battier nursing a hamstring pull and the Rockets opting not to sign Rashad McCants while he is battling an abdominal injury, the Rockets brought in 6-8 guard/forward Romel Beck.

It turns out they had been looking at Beck for a while.

"He's a wing scorer we've always had our eye on as someone we'd like to take a look at," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. "We feel like he can come in, help us out and has a shot to make it.

"We were thinking of bringing somebody else in with McCants. That didn't work out. Shane going down made it a little more urgent."

Morey said the team has not ruled out bringing in McCants.

"That abdominal injury takes an indeterminate amount of time," Morey said. "We'll wait until he can come in, do all our testing, make sure he is healthy and, if he is, take a look at him again."

Coaching job for Finch

The Rockets selected Great Britain national team coach Chris Finch, to coach the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, their NBA Development League affiliate, a move that was particularly appreciated by Rockets center/forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

"That's my GB national team coach," Mensah-Bonsu said. "It's good to see he got a job over here in the D-League. It's good he's moving on up. He's a good coach, definitely."

Finch is not the most well-known Chris Finch in England. A character in the original English version of the television show The Office is named Chris Finch.

"The Office is by far my favorite show," Mensah-Bonsu said. "The boss in that calls him ?Finchy.' I never said it to his face, but I called him (his coach) ?Finchy', too."
