Houston Rockets Roster Report 2009-07-12

Houston Rockets Roster Report 2009-07-12
DRAFT PICKS:

Jermaine Taylor, G, 6-4, Central Florida (second round) -- A prolific college scorer, the Rockets hope he can develop a more well-rounded game. He could offer depth, especially if Von Wafer leaves as a free agent.

Sergio Llull, G, 6-3, Real Madrid (second round) -- Signed for two more seasons in Europe, Llull could benefit from the time to develop.

Chase Budinger, F, 6-7, Arizona (second round) -- The Rockets love his athleticism and well-rounded offensive game. Though not a strong one-on-one player, his shooting touch and knack for playmaking could fit well playing with Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady.

PLAYER NEWS:

--G/F James White will go to camp with a non-guaranteed contract but a better opportunity to make the Rockets roster than when he signed it. With Tracy McGrady not expected to be ready for the start of the season and free agent Von Wafer unlikely to return, White will have a chance to demonstrate that he not only can be worth a roster spot, but might be able to crack the rotation.

--G/F Trevor Ariza played mostly as a forward with the Lakers but will likely get at least as much time in the backcourt with the Rockets. The Rockets believe Ariza and Shane Battier are strong enough defensively to play together, with Ariza offering enough perimeter shooting and a chance to improve his dribble penetration to replace Ron Artest at guard.

--F Chase Budinger might not get a guaranteed contract initially, as a pick in the middle of the second round, but needed just two days of two-a-day summer practices to be raving about how the Rockets' offense and emphasis on movement without the ball will fit his abilities. Coaches were equally effusive about his shooting ability. The Rockets hope that he could be a steal.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--G Tracy McGrady, weeks away from moving his rehab from microfracture surgery to the court, also had arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder to ease the discomfort he had in the shoulder the past two seasons. That procedure is not expected to keep him from offseason workouts as long as the rehab from the knee surgery.

--C Yao Ming's hairline fracture in his left foot has not healed, and he began a series of visits to doctors to consider treatment options.
