Houston Rockets Notes, Quotes 2008-12-30
--The Rockets continue to court Dikembe Mutombo, but don't expect an answer for several days at the soonest.

They dealt Steve Francis to Memphis last week. They made the deal to move under the luxury tax line, the stipulation needed to sign Mutombo.

Soon after the deal was complete, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey began working to sign Mutombo, but by now, he has some competition.

Mutombo's family had already decided to spend Christmas in Houston, an indication of his and their fondness for the city. But after a meeting with Mutombo's agent, David Falk, Morey said Mutombo is still weighing his options.

--The Rockets assumed they would need only to show up to collect their win against the Wizards. They were fully healthy for just the second time this season, playing a team with a five-game road losing streak while carrying their own seven-game home winning streak into the game.

Then the game began and they were reminded that things are not quite that easy.

"We just thought we could turn it on in the fourth quarter and win this game against a team that the record doesn't show they're a good team and it really backfired on us," Rockets guard Tracy McGrady said. "For whatever reason, our energy wasn't there. We weren't making shots. We just weren't a smart basketball team defensively."

The shortcomings were especially obvious in the first half, when the Rockets managed a season-low 36 points after a season-low 14 points in the second quarter.

"I don't care what their record is," coach Rick Adelman said. "They won their last game. The game before, they had Cleveland beat at Cleveland. I don't know if we're reading our press clippings and think we just have to go out and win. It doesn't work that way. We went out and played terrible.

"It's the worst half of basketball we played since I've been here on both ends of the court. It's inexcusable at both ends. We forced things. We didn't play together. We didn't defend."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We got what we deserved." -- Coach Rick Adelman, on Monday's loss to the Wizards.
