Houston Rockets Notes, Quotes 2009-07-10
--The Rockets were stunned when they learned during the Western Conference semifinals that Yao Ming had suffered a hairline fracture in his left foot, ending his season.

It was the fourth consecutive seasons ended or interrupted by a bone injury, but they did not expect the news they received that afternoon when they thought he had no greater problem than a sprained ankle that would have kept him out no more than one game. Within a day or two, he had no pain, no swelling. He was thought to need only to wait to for the bone to heal.

When they checked him out again, they were shocked. The bone scan revealed that the fracture had not healed. Yao began a series of visits to doctors to determine treatment options.

The Rockets would not speak about those options, but they could range from additional time spent immobilizing the foot to surgery.

"Obviously, we were hoping the first thing they tried would have worked," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. "Now they're on the next step, but it hasn't impacted our decision-making at this point. With all our injuries -- obviously, we have two big players (Yao and Tracy McGrady) who have injuries -- as that unfolds over time, we'll have to react."

--While the Rockets made calls to try to acquire a first-round pick, teams called the Rockets to try to acquire Tracy McGrady.

McGrady is not close enough in his comeback attempt from microfracture surgery to determine how far he is from coming back. But he is in the last season of his contract, worth $22.5 million, and while he is out, insurance would pick up much of the cost of his salary.

With the Rockets willing to take on a longer contract for the right player -- Rockets general manager Daryl Morey would want someone that could bring the ability to trigger offense he believes McGrady still can offer -- teams could improve their future cap situation with a trade for McGrady and his expiring contract.

Last season, Morey was not interested in offers for McGrady. This season, he said he must listen.

"We're getting a lot of interest on Tracy and I do have to listen," Morey said. "It's my job to make this team as ready to win the title as possible. I think the reason we are going to have a pretty high bar on moving him is because he still provides exactly what coach (Rick Adelman) wants and I thought we were missing, which was a guy who can get a high-quality shot at the end of the game.

"That said, we want to position ourselves for the playoffs, it looks like it's going to be hard for Tracy to be here for a good chunk of the year, so if we can get a talented player who helps us all season, I think we have to look at it."
