Houston Rockets Getting Inside 2009-11-05

Houston Rockets Getting Inside 2009-11-05The Rockets believed their first five games -- against Portland twice, against the Warriors in a back-to-back, at Utah and against the Lakers -- would show who they are and who they can be.

Now, they are sure.

The Rockets went through that stretch, 3-2, losing in Portland and in overtime against the Lakers to begin and end that five-game run. It convinced them that they can play harder than the other team, hard enough to make up for whatever they lack.

The game against the Lakers, when they did not run their offense particularly well in the fourth quarter, and did not shoot well from range at all, seemed to prove or at least reinforce that.

The Rockets outrebounded the Lakers, scored more points on the break and more in the paint. All of that, they said, came from playing hard.

"I think everybody knows us now," Aaron Brooks said. "They know we're going to share the ball, we're going to move, we're going to hustle and play. It's not a surprise."

It seems to be a daunting task to have to overachieve every night while Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming watch games from the Rockets' bench. If the five games to start the season have demonstrated anything, however, it is that they will have to, and that they might be able to win that way.

They also learned, however, that when playing that way, it becomes much tougher to lose.

"It was a tough loss," Shane Battier said. "Guys played their heart out. We gave them all they could handle. We just didn't make enough plays down the stretch in overtime."

LAKERS 103, ROCKETS 102 (OT): The Rockets led through much of the night and by as much as eight. They even led by four heading into the last 90 seconds of regulation. They just could not close out the game, failing to get good looks down the stretch of the fourth quarter and overtime. With the Lakers playing their second overtime game in as many nights, Kobe Bryant went for 41 points. He also forced the Rockets to double-team him, allowing him to set up the key baskets late in regulation and overtime.
