Houston Rockets Getting Inside 2009-09-04

Houston Rockets Getting Inside 2009-09-04Rockets general manager Daryl Morey would have been happy with a good visit and thorough status reports.

He had gone to Chicago to catch up with Tracy McGrady and check in with him and trainer Tim Grover to get a better idea about McGrady's progress in trying to come back from microfracture surgery. He got that and more.

On the day Morey visited, McGrady played five-on-five for just the second time, offering a clear picture that McGrady is well ahead of schedule in his comeback.

"He's way, way ahead of schedule," Morey said. "He's already playing. I don't think anyone could have predicted he would be playing now. He still has a long way to go. There is a lot of rust to shake off."

As is so often the case with McGrady, however, seeing McGrady did not bring clarity.

That he can play at all was encouraging. It offered a reason to hope that he can work his way back into shape and could contribute much sooner than previously thought.

Morey was ready to think McGrady could be back on the court in December or January, rather than in January, February or even March as he had previously assumed. But watching him play also brought a reminder of how far he still has to go to return to his level of play in 2007?08, before his inability to come back from offseason knee surgery cost him the bulk of last season.

Soon after Morey's visit, McGrady took a week for a long-planned China trip. He is still hopeful that he could begin camp with the team, though Morey was not ready to predict that.

For now, the Rockets seem to have a better idea about when McGrady will play than they had when he began the long road back. They just don't know what kind of player he will be when returns.
